DeSnake – The Man Who Returned From the Dead... Then Vanished Again

Some names on the darknet become legends.

Ross Ulbricht built Silk Road.

Alexandre Cazes turned AlphaBay into the largest darknet marketplace the world had ever seen.

But there is another name that continues to puzzle investigators, journalists and darknet users alike.

DeSnake.

Unlike most well-known marketplace administrators, nobody has ever confirmed who he really is.

AlphaBay's Shadow

When AlphaBay launched in late 2014, most people believed Alexandre Cazes, better known as Alpha02, was the man behind everything.

Years later it became clear that another administrator was working behind the scenes.

That person called himself DeSnake.

While Cazes handled the business side of AlphaBay, DeSnake focused on something completely different.

Security.

Encryption.

Operational security.

Server architecture.

According to people close to the marketplace, DeSnake was obsessed with making AlphaBay impossible to take down.

Ironically, that wasn't enough.

The Fall of AlphaBay

In July 2017, everything changed.

An international law enforcement operation shut down AlphaBay.

Within days, Alexandre Cazes was found dead inside a prison cell in Thailand.

Authorities celebrated what many described as the biggest darknet victory ever.

Most people assumed that every senior administrator had either been arrested or disappeared forever.

That included DeSnake.

For four years...

Nothing.

No messages.

No interviews.

No rumors that could be verified.

The man had simply vanished.

Then Something Nobody Expected Happened

On an August morning in 2021, a post appeared on Dread.

The author claimed to be DeSnake.

Most users immediately laughed.

Another scam.

Another fake administrator trying to steal deposits.

But then something happened that changed everything.

The message was digitally signed using the exact same PGP key that had been associated with AlphaBay years earlier.

Security researchers verified the signature.

The real DeSnake had returned.

AlphaBay Is Back

His announcement shocked the darknet.

AlphaBay would return.

Not as a copy.

Not as a clone.

As a completely rebuilt marketplace.

This version would no longer depend on Bitcoin.

Instead, it would focus almost entirely on Monero, arguing that privacy had become essential after years of blockchain analysis by law enforcement.

He also introduced new security features designed to prevent another disaster.

If servers disappeared, user funds were supposed to remain protected.

It sounded ambitious.

Maybe even impossible.

Yet people believed him.

Within months, vendors started returning.

Thousands of listings appeared.

AlphaBay was once again becoming one of the largest darknet markets online.

Not as big as the original...

But big enough to matter.

How Much Money Did It Make?

That's a question nobody can answer.

Unlike the first AlphaBay, which relied heavily on Bitcoin, the new marketplace operated almost entirely on Monero.

Monero doesn't have a public blockchain that investigators can analyze in the same way.

There are no public wallet balances.

No transaction graphs.

No reliable estimates.

The only person who truly knew how much money flowed through AlphaBay...

...was probably DeSnake himself.

Researchers believe the marketplace handled hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales every day, but no independent figures have ever been confirmed.

It's one of the few major darknet markets whose real size may never be known.

Then History Repeated Itself

Early in 2023, users noticed something unusual.

The marketplace's security canary had expired.

Normally, DeSnake updated it regularly to prove he still controlled the servers.

This time...

Nothing.

Days became weeks.

Weeks became months.

Moderators claimed only DeSnake could update the signature.

Without him, they couldn't even reassure users that the marketplace was still under control.

Eventually, AlphaBay simply faded away.

No seizure banner.

No FBI logo.

No exit message.

No farewell.

Just silence.

Was It an Exit Scam?

Unlike Evolution...

Unlike Empire...

Unlike Abacus...

There has never been convincing evidence that DeSnake stole everyone's money.

Some believe he was arrested.

Others think he may have died.

Some suggest he intentionally disappeared after seeing increasing pressure from international law enforcement.

The truth is...

Nobody knows.

The Last Mystery

Today, DeSnake remains one of the darknet's greatest mysteries.

He survived one of the largest law enforcement operations ever conducted.

He disappeared for four years.

Returned when nobody expected him.

Rebuilt one of the world's most famous darknet marketplaces.

Then vanished for a second time.

Perhaps one day we'll learn what really happened.

Or perhaps DeSnake will remain exactly what he has become...

A ghost story told by darknet veterans whenever a marketplace suddenly goes offline.

Because whenever users see withdrawals delayed or administrators stop communicating, the same question always appears.

"Where's DeSnake?"
