A strange crypto-related extortion case emerged this week in India after police arrested a university employee accused of sending threatening letters to local residents.
According to investigators, the suspect allegedly used the name of a well-known organized crime figure to intimidate victims and demand payment in cryptocurrency. The letters reportedly demanded the equivalent of roughly $230,000 USD in crypto and warned recipients of consequences if they refused to pay. Authorities say at least eight people received similar messages before the suspect was identified and arrested.
Police believe the plan relied on fear and the relative anonymity of cryptocurrency transfers. Fortunately, none of the reported victims transferred funds before authorities intervened.
Suspect allegedly used a famous gangster's reputation to demand crypto payments from residents. Police arrested him before any known payments were made.
